The Kindle has not been updated for some time now, and the new Kindle Oasis brings a huge update to the best selling e-reader.
The Kindle Oasis had a major design upgrade, and the palm of your hand is the primary focus. It is designed to feel more comfortable while you hold it, so you can read for hours.
It is designed to feel more comfortable while you hold it, so you can read for hours.
The biggest visual difference is the tapered handgrip and the physical buttons on the side. This provides a more comfortable and ergonomic reading experience. There is still a touch screen on the Kindle Oasis, but the physical buttons provide another way to turn the pages.
The device is 20% lighter and 30% thinner on average than any other Kindle, and the Oasis glass cover is the strongest yet
Unlike other Kindles, the Oasis comes with an integrated leather cover in Merlot, Black or Walnut. It wakes up or puts the device to sleep and easily comes off, providing the lightest ever e-reading reading experience.
The battery life is longer than other Kindles, providing up to 8 weeks of reading enjoyment.
The backlighting is improved, which delivers a beautiful reading experience. There are 60% more LED lights included in the Kindle Oasis, which provides a more consistent lighting experience, and reduces eye strain.
This is important, as my Paperwhite sometimes has some grey areas. This has bothered me from time to time, depending on the lighting I am in. If I am reading in a dark room (like when my husband is sleeping) it can be annoying.
Here are some of the details about Oasis from Amazon’s website:
- Our thinnest and lightest Kindle ever–read even more comfortably for hours.
- All-new ergonomic design with dedicated buttons to effortlessly turn the page.
- Longest Kindle battery life–the included leather charging cover boosts battery to last months. Choose from a black, merlot, or walnut removable cover.
- High-resolution 300 ppi display with crisp, laser quality text. Reads like real paper without glare, even in direct sunlight.
- Enhanced built-in adjustable light evenly illuminates the screen for perfect reading anywhere, anytime.
This new e-reader will entice current and new Kindle owners. The base price is $289, but remember it includes a integrated leather cover, unlike other Kindles. It would be nice to be able to buy it without the cover to make it more affordable, but Amazon has locked us in. Third party cover and case designers will be knocked out by this strategic move.
But, it is beautiful! It goes on sale today, and ships on April 27th. I put one in merlot on pre-order, so keep watch! I will immediately post a review.
If you decide to order one, Amazon allows you to customize the device. Don’t pay the extra price tag to remove special offers. They are not that annoying, and I actually appreciate the suggestions. They only appear on your lock screen. Also, you only need the internet to purchase and download books. With today’s widespread access to wifi and personal hotspots, the $70 3G upgrade isn’t worth it either.
Another nice feature on Amazon is they allow you to set it up as an interest free payment plan over 5 months. This may help you decide if you want to make the jump.
